Abstract

The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) to strengthen steel structures is one of the recent innovative developments being made. However, much research hasn’t been performed regarding how the bond performance varies under different environmental conditions during the installation phase of CFRP. This study was conducted in order to address these limitations by testing samples under different environmental conditions around Sri Lanka. Four-point-bending test was carried out on the eight test specimens and the research findings revealed that CFRP absolutely increased the strength of steel by 39% when bonded together. Additionally, it was found that extreme humidity conditions significantly degrade the bond strength. Nevertheless, with the increment of steel structures to be retrofitted and taking the environmental conditions into account, the application of CFRP was found to be a viable solution to increase the service life of steel structures in Sri Lanka.
