Abstract

This paper examines the need for inland ports in Sri Lanka. A hybrid approach comprising both quantitative and qualitative methods was used in here using the data collected through primary surveys and published sources. Resultant conclusion is that the inland ports are needed in Sri Lanka not very much as advancement to freight management process but as a solution to capacity-related issues on roads and the sea-port network with railways playing prominent role. Findings further of show that inland ports could offer a relief to heavily congested roads of Colombo City and the port infrastructure ushering substantial savings to the economy and they should be established within the Western Province.
